The Unit is a reference center for clinical and preclinical research in oncologic and rare skin diseases, with particular expertise in epidermolysis bullosa (EB), cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). It conducts phase II–IV clinical trials on biologic drugs, gene therapies, and innovative topical treatments, and promotes non-profit observational studies. In parallel, the Unit carries out high-impact translational preclinical research, investigating the mechanisms underlying systemic complications and cutaneous carcinomas, the genetics of EB, and novel diagnostic approaches such as melanin autofluorescence. As part of the European Reference Network for rare and complex skin diseases (ERN-Skin), the Unit contributes to data collection, pathway standardization, and the development of innovative therapeutic strategies at both national and international levels.
